The only church of the Genoese Renaissance, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Carignano is designed starting in 1549 by Perugian architect Galeazzo Alessi, who conceived it as a grandiose aristocratic church for the noble Sauli family. Its location on Carignano Hill makes it one of the most recognizable features of the city and the most fascinating belvedere in Genoa.
Discover the history of this architectural jewel, an expression of the greatest, wealthiest and most cultured society of Renaissance and later Baroque Genoa, and reach the ancient scenic walkways-hitherto never open to the public-that characterize it, to admire the area, from the Lantern to the Portofino promontory.
