Between 1790 and 1796, a stone's throw from Porta Orientale, along the line of the ancient city walls abutting the Public Gardens, Count Ludovico Barbiano di Belgioioso built his beautiful villa to spend the last years of his life there. Since then the grandiose complex, designed in the neoclassical style by architect Leopold Pollack, has spanned the centuries, hosting powerful and terrible figures from Napoleon to Field Marshal Radetzky, from the Savoy family to Mussolini.
