Castello di Ivrea

The Medieval Castle with Red Towers

Located in the historic heart of Ivrea, the Castle with Red Towers – as Giosuè Carducci described it – once again welcomes visitors.

Built in 1358 by the will of Amedeo VI of Savoy, the building has been the site of political events and lavish medieval feasts. It still retains its defensive fortress character with its commanding position over the city.

It is one of the symbols of Ivrea, with its distinctive profile of three towers (the fourth tower, intended as a munitions depot, was reduced to the height of the walkways in 1676 following a violent explosion).

After a long period of closure, during which significant restoration work was carried out by the Municipality of Ivrea – the owner of the property – it is now possible to discover its history and curiosities through a guided tour. The tour allows visitors to explore the large courtyard, some of the cells dating back to the period when the Castle was used as a prison, and to climb the walkways, which have never been open to the public before.

From the top, you can admire a splendid panorama of the city, the Eporedian Morainic Amphitheater, and gaze from the Canavese area to the entrance of the Aosta Valley.
