Discover the Basilica of Sant’Andrea in Mantua through unique visiting routes.
Commissioned by Marquis Ludovico Gonzaga and built starting in 1472, based on a project by the humanist Leon Battista Alberti, the city’s co-cathedral, which houses the tomb of court painter Andrea Mantegna, represents one of the greatest expressions of Italian Renaissance architecture.
The basilica preserves in its crypt, inside the Holy Vessels, the most venerable relic of Christianity: the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, brought to Mantua, according to tradition, by the Roman soldier Longinus and rediscovered thanks to the miraculous revelations of Saint Andrew. A relic symbolizing redemption and faith, it also contributed to the development and renown of the city.
Through passages never before opened to the public, you can reach the immense 18th-century dome, designed by Filippo Juvarra to complete the structure, and enjoy exclusive panoramic viewpoints of the building and the city.
