Discover the Basilica of Sant\u2019Andrea in Mantua through unique visiting routes.<\/p>\n
Commissioned by Marquis Ludovico Gonzaga and built starting in 1472, based on a project by the humanist Leon Battista Alberti, the city\u2019s co-cathedral, which houses the tomb of court painter Andrea Mantegna, represents one of the greatest expressions of Italian Renaissance architecture.<\/p>\n
The basilica preserves in its crypt, inside the Holy Vessels, the most venerable relic of Christianity: the Most Precious Blood of Jesus, brought to Mantua, according to tradition, by the Roman soldier Longinus and rediscovered thanks to the miraculous revelations of Saint Andrew. A relic symbolizing redemption and faith, it also contributed to the development and renown of the city.<\/p>\n
